Guyana’s $800M Grid Upgrade Signals Wider Caribbean Power Infrastructure Push

Guyana’s $800M Grid Upgrade Signals Wider Caribbean Power Infrastructure Push
Guyana Power and Light (GPL) is advancing an $800 million electricity infrastructure program as the country prepares its grid for rising demand and new generation capacity, highlighting a wider push to modernize power networks across the Caribbean.

The regional investment opportunity will be in focus at Caribbean Energy Week (CEW) 2027, taking place in Georgetown, Guyana from July 13–15. As Caribbean markets add renewable and gas-fired generation, investment in transmission, distribution and grid-management systems is becoming increasingly important to connecting new capacity and improving system reliability.

Guyana Advances Power Program Amid Gas-to-Energy Drive

Guyana’s peak electricity demand has more than doubled from 125 MW in 2020 to 255 MW, while GPL’s customer base has grown from approximately 201,000 to 250,000. At the same time, the country is preparing for up to 300 MW of new generation from its Gas-to-Energy project, increasing requirements for transmission, distribution and system-management infrastructure.

GPL’s modernization program includes 200 km of new distribution feeders, double-circuit transmission lines, smart-grid substations and a national control center. The utility ultimately aims to develop a self-healing grid by 2030, strengthening reliability while creating opportunities for grid technology providers, engineering companies and infrastructure investors.

The investment also supports Guyana’s wider strategy of using its offshore gas resources to strengthen domestic energy security. As Gas-to-Energy advances, opportunities are emerging across gas processing, power generation, transmission, distribution and associated services.

Caribbean Markets Step Up Grid Investment

The Bahamas is pursuing a similar modernization strategy. Bahamas Grid Company has completed a $130 million nationwide upgrade involving high-voltage substations, fiber communications and a looped transmission system. The upgraded network is being developed alongside 200 MW of renewable energy projects and 190 MW of planned gas-fired generation, creating additional requirements for grid infrastructure and system integration.

The Dominican Republic is also expanding distribution infrastructure. EdeEste launched an RD$843 million project in August 2026 to rehabilitate the CAPO09 and CAPO11 circuits in the National District, while Edesur announced more than RD$281.1 million of investment in Pedernales, including 13.96 km of medium-voltage networks, 885 poles and 116 distribution transformers.

Beyond national networks, the Caribbean Development Bank’s CREGI-RES initiative is examining the potential for regional electricity interconnections and cross-border power trading. The initiative is expected to identify up to six candidate interconnection projects by Q4 2026, potentially creating future opportunities in submarine cables, transmission infrastructure, renewable integration and grid-management technologies.

Together, these projects point to a Caribbean power sector entering a new investment cycle, with grid infrastructure becoming increasingly important to unlocking new generation, improving reliability and integrating renewable and gas resources.

CEW 2027 Connects Projects with Capital and Technology

The scale of planned grid and generation investment will place power infrastructure firmly on the agenda at CEW 2027. The event will bring governments, utilities, investors, financiers, developers and technology providers together to examine opportunities spanning generation, transmission, distribution, energy storage and regional integration.

Held under the patronage of President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali and with the endorsement of Minister of Natural Resources Vickram Bharrat, CEW returns to Guyana from July 13-15, 2027.
