TotalEnergies CEO Visits Suriname as GranMorgu Advances Toward 2028 First Oil
The September 19 visit included meetings with Surinamese President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons and Staatsolie Managing Director Annand Jagesar, as well as a tour of the port facilities supporting GranMorgu. Construction of the Floating Production Storage and Offloading vessel, fabrication of key components for the offshore installations and preparations for production drilling are progressing according to schedule, with first oil planned for 2028. More than 100 Surinamese companies are already supplying goods and services to the project.
GranMorgu will develop the Sapakara and Krabdagu fields in Block 58, which TotalEnergies says contain nearly 760 million barrels of recoverable oil reserves. The project will use an FPSO with production capacity of 220,000 barrels per day. TotalEnergies operates Block 58 with a 40% interest alongside APA Corporation and Staatsolie, which holds a 20% participating interest.
Beyond GranMorgu, TotalEnergies is maintaining a broader exploration position in Suriname. The company operates shallow-water Blocks 6 and 8 with a 40% interest alongside QatarEnergy and Staatsolie subsidiary Paradise Oil Company, and operates Block 64 with a 40% interest alongside QatarEnergy and Petronas. TotalEnergies drilled an exploration well in Block 64 in 2025, which produced negative results. A new exploration campaign is planned in Block 58 in 2027 to investigate additional potential around the GranMorgu development.
This regional footprint extends into neighboring Guyana, where TotalEnergies is operator of shallow offshore Block S4 with a 40% interest alongside QatarEnergy and Petronas. The production-sharing agreement signed in November 2025 includes a minimum work program requiring a 3D seismic survey covering the block, with TotalEnergies' latest factbook scheduling the survey to begin in December 2026.
These developments point to a widening range of commercial opportunities across engineering, technical consulting, drilling, seismic, fabrication and specialized offshore services as international operators move from exploration into development and production. That activity will feed into the investment agenda at Caribbean Energy Week (CEW) 2027, held in Georgetown from July 13–15. Under the theme Unlocking the Caribbean Energy Corridor: Oil, Gas, LNG & Investment for a New Global Hub, CEW 2027 will bring together regional governments, international energy companies, investors and service providers to examine projects and investment opportunities across the Caribbean energy value chain.
